Football wins CCS Division V title

Football won the CCS Division V title in a 27-24 victory over Monterey High School. With the championship win, the team secured its first CCS title since 2010 and advances to the state tournament.

Senior and cornerback Kai Bussey said his third-quarter interception was important for shifting the team’s momentum.

“It really turned things around for us because they were close on the goal line,” Bussey said. “We scored off that drive, so it was a really big turning point for our team.

Senior and linebacker Franklin Tutor said the team played well as a whole.

“There were some mistakes, but we came out on top,” Tutor said. “We did some adjustments, and things ended up fine. Our offense balled out. Everything went good.”

Senior and running back Jack Newman, who scored two touchdowns, said winning the CCS championship is meaningful because of the team’s resilience throughout the season.

“It means everything,” Newman said. “After such a bad start to the season, being able to rally as a team and win CCS, it’s freaking incredible.”

Head coach David DeGeronimo said the team will enjoy the CCS championship victory and then start to prepare for the state tournament.

“We don’t know who we play until Sunday, and then we’ll see what’s going on with that,” DeGeronimo said. “But for now, Friday night, Saturday night, even part of Sunday, we’re gonna celebrate a CCS title.”

He added that his hopes for the team remain high.

DeGeronimo said, “We’re on a run right now, and we’re going to try and keep it going.”
