Girls volleyball optimistic for improvement

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]fter starting the season with a record of 12-9, senior Hillary Cheung said her team is optimistic for improvement and looking forward to competing in its upcoming playoffs.

Cheung, the team captain, said the season has been difficult.

“This year, our season has definitely had some ups and downs in comparison to our prior seasons,” Cheung said. “Last year, we lost quite a few of our starting players, so we have had to start pretty fresh this season.”

And Cheung said players are primarily focused on team dynamics.

“We definitely have been trying to find a bit more consistency in our performance which is our main goal,” Cheung said.

Girls varsity volleyball coach Chris Crader said heading into playoffs, his team is trying to work around the various obstacles they have faced.

“The season’s been bumpy since we’ve had some injuries and coming back to school has been emotionally hard for a lot of girls,” Crader said. “But we’re starting to put this together again, and I think we’re getting better.”

Despite the bumpy start, Cheung said she looks forward to the upcoming schedule.

“I’m excited for the next couple of games as people are starting to come back from injuries, and we’ve found a bit more identity within our team,” Cheung said.

Junior Nika Chapin said she’s proud of how the team has progressed despite injuries.

“I think they pushed other players that are usually quieter to speak up and become leaders which have been really great,” Chapin said.

Crader said he is optimistic about the team’s improvement.

Crader said, “Hopefully, we’ll be back to playing the way we want to be by the time the playoffs come around.”
