Police blocked off South Court block between North California Avenue and Oregon Expressway following the discovery of a military shell and grenade in a Palo Alto home on Thursday afternoon.

Santa Clara County sheriff’s bomb squad was called to investigate the scene and prevent cars from entering.

“We want to make sure no civilians get hurt and protect property as well,” a fireman who chose to remain anonymous said. “Until they get it out and discover what it is, they’ll keep the street closed.”

A couple on the block that chose to remain anonymous said police communicated well with residents.

“They said they had found some old-time military artifacts and that they’re trying to dispose of them safely,” the couple said.

Firefighters were also stationed on one side of the street, ready in case of an emergency.

“(We’re here) in case it goes ‘boom,’ and anybody gets hurt,” the fireman said.

Still, residents outside the blocked-off area were comfortable in their homes, joking about the situation.

A resident said, “The moral of the story is that people should get rid of their clutter in a responsible manner.”

As of 6:54 p.m., the Santa Clara sheriff’s bomb squad determined both itemsthe shell and grenadeto be safe and reopened the street. A news release has been set to roll out later tonight.

The City of Palo Alto has issued a press release.
