Foothill community college will now offer in-person multivariable calculus class on Paly campus after school for the upcoming 2023-24 fall semester. The class will be taught by Foothill instructors from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

In an email sent to The Campanile, PAUSD Superintendent Don Austin said the district has been trying their best to meet parent concerns about having access to multivariable calculus at Paly.

“We appreciate your feedback and want to provide clarification to address your concerns,” Austin said. “Our FAQ page addresses most questions and can be found here.”

By creating a separate multivariable calculus class on Paly campus, students will no longer have to attend the class online or on Foothill campus.

According to the district FAQ page, dual enrollment is not an option for multivariable calculus because of California Education Code. Math 1C, the multivariable calculus class, has been designated as a concurrent enrollment class, which will have the course appear on a community college transcript instead of the PAUSD transcript.

According to Austin, Foothill will screen students to ensure they meet the prerequisites for the course. Students will need to contact the Foothill Coordinator, Alejandro Favela at [email protected], for questions about the prerequisite screening or sign-up process.

“We appreciate your understanding and support as we work through the essential questions regarding our relationship with Foothill Community College,” Austin said. “We have a process for adding new courses, outlined in our policy, and we will continue to follow this process to ensure that all courses meet our high standards.”
