Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is easily the best superhero film since “The Avengers.” With a strong cast, interesting plot and impressive action sequences, you should see this movie while it is still in theaters, regardless of whether or not you are a fan of superhero films.

Following the calamitous events he experienced with the Avengers, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, (played by Chris Evans) is living peacefully in Washington D.C. and trying to adapt to the contemporary world. However, his quiet lifestyle does not last long. Rogers, Agent Romanoff, aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) are betrayed by their former agency SHIELD and marked for death. Captain America teams up with Black Widow and his new sidekick The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in order to discover the deadly secret behind SHIELD while simultaneously fighting off a mysterious new villain known simply as The Winter Soldier.

All performances in the film are spot on. Although some critics have argued that Evans’s performance is “bland” or “average,” I believe that Evans gave a flawless performance. Not all superheroes can be as charismatic as Iron Man; there must be diversity, and Evans nails the role of Captain America: a stern, aloof man who grew up during a different period in history.

Like many other great superhero films, there are moments of comedy throughout the film during moments of calmness. For instance, after his morning run, Rogers pulls out a list of things he needs to learn about that have happened while he was frozen, most notably, “Thai food,” “Star Wars /Trek” and “Disco.”

The one element of a great film that is not prevalent in “Winter Soldier” is romance. Although Captain America and Black Widow spend a lot of time together during the film and there seems to be at least some chemistry between the two, nothing ultimately happens romantically. The film makes up for the lack of romance by touching on another topic. All I can say, without giving anything important away, is that the topic is everlasting friendship.

On a more emotional level, I think that we can all relate to Captain America in one way or another. He is an outsider, after all, having grown up during a completely different era. It is human nature to root for the underdog, and if you’ve seen this film’s 2011 prequel, you know that Captain America is an underdog.

Whether you want to watch a movie with an exciting plot, loved “The Avengers,” enjoy riveting action sequences or just want to see a genuinely good film, go and see “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in the theater.
