Boys tennis lost on senior night to Junipero Serra High School, 4-3, in the second round of the Central Coast Section playoffs on May 8. The game came down to the last individual match.
Head coach Andy Chang said the pressure of the game was a factor that led to the team’s loss.
“For some of the close matches, I think our players experienced a bit of pressure, so they were a bit tight,” Chang said.
Senior Nuri Hafizi said the team’s close-knit community showed during the match.
“The team performed really well in terms of energy,” Hafizi said. “Everyone came out, (and) everyone did a really good job of supporting each other”
Hafizi said honoring the seniors was more important than winning the game.
“We’re more here to celebrate our seniors on senior night and we’re all just here for each other,” Hafizi said. “Today wasn’t really about winning, but it was more about celebrating,”
Chang said this contributed to the team’s loss, as he did not play the strongest players.
“If I played our best lineup with more freshmen, sophomores and juniors, I am confident we could have won this one,” Chang said.
Despite the loss, Chang said he is proud of the team this season as first place in their league.
“So this season finished great,” Chang said. “We’re celebrating our championship, but then, next season, (with) tougher teams, but I think we’ll still do pretty well.”
Hafizi said that as he leaves the team, he will miss the people around him most.
“I’m going to miss the community the most and our coaches,” Hafizi said. “Our coaches are really supportive, and they know us really well. And I’ve known some of these guys since before high school.”
