Google Expansion

Google plans to build a 40-acre campus in Mountain View, including housing, office space and public space. Google’s Googleplex headquarters are already in Mountain View, so the plan would add more square footage to an area where Google already has significant presence.

Of about 1,850 residential units being built for this new project, 20% will be designated as affordable housing. This comes following Google’s pledge to repurpose some of its land to create homes for lower and middle-income families.

“On behalf of the City Council and years of hard work by all, I am pleased that we have taken significant action in transforming the North Bayshore into a vibrant, sustainable, and complete neighborhood and community that provides opportunities for all people to live, work and play while also nurturing and enhancing our natural habitat,” said Mountain View Mayor Ellen Kamei. “Google recognizes this unique opportunity to work in partnership with the City and the community to convert our vision into reality. We look forward to collaborating with them on next steps in the process.”

Google and other tech companies have been criticized for contributing to skyrocketing rent prices in the Bay Area. The proposal is still in its early stages, and many buildings haven’t been designed yet.

However, all of this comes in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, a time where in-person work, especially at tech-related companies, is at an all-time low. Despite this, Google plans to move forward with the project, by creating what they describe as a complete community including bike paths, a swimming pool and a dog park.
