Athletic director Scott Davis announced to the football team that Ed Tonga would replace former head coach David DeGeronimo on Friday, Jan. 16.
Principal Brent Kline later introduced Tonga in a press release to teachers and the football parents, highlighting Tonga’s involvement with the school.
“Ed understands that success in football begins with character, accountability, and relationships,” Kline wrote in the press release.
Tonga has been coaching Paly football for three years as an assistant coach, and was the defensive coordinator this past season. He also works as a Paly Student and Family Engagement (SaFE) specialist.
Going forward, Tonga said he hopes to foster chemistry and teamwork among the team.
“It’s a brotherhood,” Tonga said. “It’s being able to trust one another and be aligned with each other, and to be connected, not only on the field, but also off the field.”
Junior Adam Maldonado said Tonga has always been a supportive and integral part of the football program.
“I’m very, very excited for what this next season is going to bring,” Maldonado said. “Ever since my time began here at Paly, Coach T has always uplifted us and has brought the best energy possible to the team.”
Maldonado also said he expects that Tonga will bring new enthusiasm to the program.
“It’s going to be a complete shift from last season — the energy is going to increase by a landslide,” Maldonado said. “(He’s) just going to bring the vibes of the team (up), the brotherhood is going to be closer, and overall, that’s going to help with the teamwork and the overall cooperation of the team. It’s going to help us excel at the highest level possible.”
Tonga said while he is the new head coach, many people will contribute to the team’s growth.
“Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to just be me,” Tonga said. “It’s also going to be the work of the community. I would love the support of the rest of this school, all the way from the cooking class, to the journalists, all the way to the band and throughout sports. I think it’s gonna take a village for us to work together and build this new culture.”

Is this enough to turn around an 0-10 team? Why did Paly not seek a coach outside Palo Alto High current staff?
