Girls varsity basketball defeated Lynbrook High School 47-20 in its final home game of the season on Feb. 17, senior night.
Senior Camryn Ogawa, the only senior on the team, said the team came together for a special win.
“I thought today was a great game because it was senior night, and we came through with a win,” Ogawa said. “We had lots of high energy, and we played together as a team.”
The game started slowly, with the Vikings leading 18-5 at halftime. However, the team picked up the pace in the second half, outscoring Lynbrook by 14 points.
Ogawa said adjusting the team’s strategy was essential to building momentum in the game.
“We talked through what parts we felt were not working as well for us, and so we changed up our defense, and we started to hype ourselves up so we could get the energy to keep playing,” Ogawa said.
Head coach Kevin Blunt said focusing on defense was central to this shift.
“I think the girls get carried away with wanting to score more, but I think defense is what we need to do,” Blunt said. “That’s what got us started.”
Blunt said securing the win on senior night was especially meaningful.
“It was important for us to get the victory,” Blunt said. “It’s such a special night, and we really just wanted to get that victory for Cam.”
Blunt said Ogawa’s impact on the program reflects her dedication and resilience.
“Camryn has been in the program for the three years that I’ve been here,” Blunt said “And she’s seen the good, bad and the ugly, from when we went 0-24 my first year, to 11-13 last year, to 18-7 right now.”
Adding on, Ogawa said senior night was bittersweet.
“Senior night is really special to me, because I’ve been through the program for three years now, and I started when there was a rebranding year,” Ogawa said. “And so me being here, as a senior, is definitely surreal, and it’s sad to think that this is my last home game.”
Looking forward, Blunt said the team still has areas to improve.
“One thing I like is that they were cheering for each other,” Blunt said. “They were super excited for each other, and they were happy. One thing that I think that we can work on is free throws. We were one for 10 tonight.”
Overall, Ogawa said she is pleased with how the team performed.
“I thought our season ended really well, and I’m really proud of all my teammates,” Ogawa said. “I’m glad they were able to get where we are today.”
